What are my options from most basic toy environment to more realistic set-up.
Great if you can give for each solution a basic indication of cost (software / hardware), and if appropriate the space needed.

I'm starting to save up to get my pilots license and I was thinking I might be able to do some amount of prep work by using a flight simulator. That being said, I realize there must be some huge limitations to what I can actually learn, on my own, on a flight sim. So, out of curiosity, are there good things to try practicing on my own in a flight sim? There's got to be a few basic things that would make it worth my time... Otherwise I'll just go back to flying around aimlessly like I usually do :).
This comes from a flight simulator experiment ages ago in the Boeing 737.... I'm on the runway. I engage the heading switch, followed by the altitude and thrust. The aircraft lifts off, although hardly in a clean rotation. Now I'm wondering: While it did work in the flight simulator, will the autopilot follow these commands in real life as well if I repeated this in a business or commercial jet? Is there anything stopping the autopilot from engaging a specified altitude or from following instructions which are utter nonsense?
I'm thinking of building some of physical aspects of a flight simulator, such as the overhead panels and pedestal. Is there a publication available where I could find detailed dimensions of cockpit panel sizes of say Boeing 737 and A320s? I've found some pictures online but they don't quite have the detail I would like. Google images shows a few results with detailed dimensions, so I'm wondering where they got theirs from... actual measurements perhaps? (there are photos of measurements, but i'd like something maybe a little more exact) Is there maybe a standard size of these panels, also
I've noticed that on some airlines (I may have seen it on SAS) the cabin crew had a small touchscreen at the front of the plane which they were using to select recorded audio messages etc, in both their language, and English. There are various services that use world-wide Boeing Winds for forecast wind data which can be used to calculate an approximate flight time between two locations. They usually have best case, worst case, and average case for each location, altitude, and date in the future. I have searched and searched Google to no avail. Where can this wind data be found, and how can it be used in a commercial product? In a full motion Level C or D simulator like those used by the airlines and for jet type ratings: How should a pilot log the simulator time in their logbook? I.e. Let's say that we're directly west of CATLI and have been cleared direct CATLI for the RNAV approach. We load the approach into the GNS430 and proceed direct the fix. After crossing CATLI outbound for the hold-in-lieu-of-procedure-turn, we realize that we want to stay in the hold for a few more turns. How do I tell the 430 that I don't want it to sequence to ZAMGI upon arrival at CATLI?
If someone does a contract flight, or a mechanic does contract maintenance for an aircraft owner and they refuse to pay after the fact, what options do they have to "encourage" the owner to pay?
