    Why do some aircraft require anti-icing on the tail while others (Dassault Falcon Jets, Boeing 737, 747, etc.) don't?

  • Some airplanes don't need the horizontal stabilizer to have anti-ice because it was shown during flight testing that there were no adverse effects from having ice on the tail.

    This is mainly because the horizontal stabilizer/elevator has been designed so that even with a degradation of lift due to the ice, it still produces a sufficient tail down force to maintain control, even when approaching the stall speed.

    The airplanes that do have anti-ice usually either have smaller horizontal stabilizers or (on some older designs) couldn't get the FAA to sign off on a design without it. Some designs are also more prone to collecting ice (based mainly on the radius of the leading edge) so must demonstrate sufficient handling qualities with even more ice, which may not be possible.

  • The MD-900 is a helicopter which seems to be quite popular with law enforcement agencies. As you can see, instead of an anti-torque tail rotor, a fan exhaust is directed out slots in the tail boom. I was wondering if this works in regards to auto rotation, should the aircraft lose its engines.

  • I'm pretty sure that there are no aircraft equipped with a brake on its nose wheel, however two of my colleagues think there might have been. Are there? Aircraft with retractable gear of course have devices to stop the wheels from spinning when retracted, but I'm asking about brakes used to stop or slow down the aircraft. Please don't consider aircraft with a tail wheel, gliders, experimental aircraft, or aircraft used for flight testing (certified aircraft only).

    How is the ATR 42/72 empennage considered? Is it a T-Tail or a cruciform tail? From the image the elevators are placed quite high on the tail that they can be considered as a T-Tail but is it so? Looking at the tail of a 727 the elevators are placed at the top of the tail but just leaving the space for the mechanism to move them, whereas on the ATR they are placed in a slightly lower position. Are there any technical specifications and measurements that clearly define the difference between the two mentioned configurations? I understand that cruciform means "similar to a cross

  • In some light aircraft, like a Cessna 172, the pitot tube is heated but the exterior static port isn't. The usual reason I've heard is that static ports are much less susceptible to icing, but why is that the case?

  • Apparently, even if you have declared an urgent situation or an emergency, you cannot enter restricted or prohibited airspace, and ATC may not be able to clear you into the area. So, my question: If you had a serious condition onboard an aircraft (say severe icing) and high terrain (I know, you probably haven't planned) in all directions except for restricted or prohibited airspace, what should you do to try and make sure that people are aware of your situation and can try and minimise the risk of doing so?

  • I was looking through my ADSB Virtual Radar outputs couple days ago and saw a weird re-route for one of the aircraft that looked out of place. Can one of the pilots/ATC guys pitch in to help me understand what may have caused this A/C to do this? Is this "normal"?   • If I'm flying in conditions that are conducive to carburetor icing, and my carb-heat cable becomes in-operable, is there anything I can do to prevent engine failure if my carburetor starts icing up? Assuming there are no immediate landing-areas to stop and fix the problem.
